Review: Bright Side (Bright Side, #1) by Kim Holden

Secrets. Everyone has one. Some are bigger than others. And when secrets are revealed, Some will heal you … And some will end you. Kate Sedgwick’s life has been anything but typical. She’s endured hardship and tragedy, but throughout it all she remains happy and optimistic (there’s a reason her best friend Gus calls her Bright Side). Kate is strong-willed, funny, smart, and musically gifted. She’s also never believed in love. So when Kate leaves San Diego to attend college in the small town of Grant, Minnesota, the last thing she expects is to fall in love with Keller Banks. They both feel it. But they each have a reason to fight it. They each have a secret. And when secrets are revealed, Some will heal you … And some will end you.

My Review:

My heart is broken in a thousand pieces! Honestly, had I known that this book was going to gut and wreck me like it has, I’m not sure I would have read it. For these types of book, I have to be prepared and have the right frame of mind. Right now, I’m just broken. WOW!
A book like this gives you hope that all the bad things in the world will be cured.

The Heroine in this story is Kate Sedgwick aka Bright Side. Her best friend Gus gave her that nickname, I quickly discovered why he picked what I now consider such a fitting nickname for her. I immediately fell in love with Kate. She’s very witty and fun loving in spite of a horrendous past, she makes due in the present, but also preparing for her foreseeable future.

Her friendship with Gus is absolutely breathtaking! I loved the witty banter between the two. I really liked how the author (Kim Holden) created characters who genuinely care for each other after being of the opposite sex with two very different upbringing. That’s immediately what drew me in. After listening to the first couple of chapters, the bond that the two shared fascinated me. I think the character development was really on point. I also love that she threw in Keller Banks, who later becomes Kate’s boyfriend.

The beginning of the book Kate is settling in at college in Grant, Minnesota and trying to overcome being homesick and heartsick from being so far from Gus who’s is back in San Diego when he isn’t traveling with his band! (Yes, Gus is in a band! So very Swoonworthy!) Kate is also musically talented but choose not be part of the band in spite of Gus’ attempts to get her to join.

Later, Kate meets Keller Grant at a coffee shop where he works. He too, is a college student. The two eventually become involved. Keller also comes from a different background from Kate, so again, it’s refreshing to see how these two different backgrounds collide together. Again, I think this puts a bit of a twist to the plot and makes the story even more interesting. Interesting enough, Gus has a secret, but so does she!

The secrets in this book make for a great plot. You know there are secrets upfront, if you read the synopsis beforehand, one that will utterly destroy you. To me, Kim Holden went outside of the box on your typical love stories. I love that about the book. Boundaries are really tested between author and reader. I can see some people not liking this book because it gives us a dose of REALITY that we often need especially when constantly reading Happily Ever Afters…
Just know that going in, you will go through an emotional roller coaster. This book is also a reminder that life, unfortunately, is unpredictable and not always fair. Relationships are tested to the brink of no return and will definitely be challenged… And life will go on in its normally unforeseeable way..
