Review: You (You, #1) by Caroline Kepnes

514WoLqKE1L._UY250_

Synopsis:

When a beautiful, aspiring writer strides into the East Village bookstore where Joe Goldberg works, he does what anyone would do: he Googles the name on her credit card.

There is only one Guinevere Beck in New York City. She has a public Facebook account and Tweets incessantly, telling Joe everything he needs to know: she is simply Beck to her friends, she went to Brown University, she lives on Bank Street, and she’ll be at a bar in Brooklyn tonight—the perfect place for a “chance” meeting.

As Joe invisibly and obsessively takes control of Beck’s life, he orchestrates a series of events to ensure Beck finds herself in his waiting arms. Moving from stalker to boyfriend, Joe transforms himself into Beck’s perfect man, all while quietly removing the obstacles that stand in their way—even if it means murder.

A terrifying exploration of how vulnerable we all are to stalking and manipulation, debut author Caroline Kepnes delivers a razor-sharp novel for our hyper-connected digital age. You is a compulsively readable page-turner that’s being compared to Gone Girl, American Psycho, and Stephen King’s Misery.

My Review:

YOU

YOU YOU YOU YOU YOU YOU YOU YOU YOU YOU! Ahhhh, I think, I have YOU out of my system. After a little over 12 hours of the word YOU being drilled into my head I feel somewhat possessed by the word. (Am I the only one who feels this way after reading/listening to this book?!) My God, now the sound of the word makes me feel exhausted (drained actually) and it’s only one syllable. YOU would understand if YOU read the book! I wonder how many times the word YOU was used in this book! It has to be record breaking!

YOU should know straight off the bat, that this is not a romance…Unless YOU consider some serious stalker-ish, psycho-ish, and insane-ish bullshit as romantic!

Joe Goldberg is the man (well he thinks he is)! He’s the narrator who’s telling the story and YOU is Guinvere Beck also known as just Beck. Joe works at a bookstore. One day, Beck goes to the bookstore, it was like insane love at first sight for Joe. Beck is beautiful, sexy, and educated and Joe, well he’s just well read!

In Joe’s mind Beck is everything he ever wanted and needed. Beck was the missing piece in his world. However, Beck doesn’t quite feel the same about Joe…and at this point the games of insane-ish obsession begins. We quickly find out that social media is not our friend, but they are the best friend of stalkers. (Ha, Most of us know this but not Beck!)

(Side Note: I’m now scared of bookstores with male employee who I believe could possibly be a Joe! Well Played, Caroline Kepnes, Amazon should Thank You!)

This book made me laugh…Joe is beyond crazy, he’s an obsessed insane sick asshole and that’s what made this book, so damn good! He knew she wasn’t that into him.  It’s funny because when someone isn’t that into YOU, they don’t care about YOU and Joe knew this because he would often mention she doesn’t even ask me how I am or try and get to know me. (Dude, she’s just not that into YOU! And YOU know it!) This dude was so exhausting, I was so freaking tired of him. I found myself saying “No Joe, DON’T DO IT!” way too many times. Who thinks of this sh*t?! No seriously?! Caroline Kepnes that’s who!

“Who can sleep with you in the world?”

This was a nice change of pace for me (definitely since it’s not my reality). I mainly, read HEAs,  which have dreamy swoon-worthy fictional men! Joe is the absolute polar opposite. He’s really a certifiable nightmare. It’s funny because the people that, I follow on Goodreads that have read this book are die-hard HEA fans and they gave this book high ratings! I believe that the high ratings are due to the fact, that this book was skillfully crafted. There were absolutely no dull moments. It was intense madness that kept on rolling and honestly, I think that’s how I got hooked! We also knew what we were getting ourselves into because the synopsis warned us.

Caroline Kepnes is a wonderful writer. This book was brilliantly written, even though she created a heinous psycho. Joe kept me  on  the edge of my seat guessing on what he could possibly do next to gain Beck’s trust and love.

If I  hear the word YOU it will only be too soon! Maybe, I will be able to handle the word “LOVE” better. Love is the next book in this series… Stay Tuned!

“The problem with books is that they end. They seduce you. They spread their legs to you and pull you inside. And you go deep and leave your possessions and your ties to the world at the door and you like it inside and you don’t want for your possessions or your ties and then, the book evaporates.”

Review: A Stone in the Sea (A Bleeding Stars Novel Book 1) by A.L. Jackson

51XSIatSPsL._UY250_

Synopsis:

A Stone in the Sea ~

He wanted nothing at all…

Until he found she had everything to give…

Sunder lead singer and guitarist Sebastian Stone has everything—fans, fame, and fortune. He also has a heart full of bitterness and a reputation for a short-fused temper. But an outward reputation rarely reveals the true man inside. Facing assault charges after trying to protect his younger brother, Sebastian is sent to Savannah, Georgia to lie low until the dust settles in L.A.

Shea Bentley is beautiful, kind, and hiding from the very lifestyle Sebastian has always embraced.

When the mysterious, tattooed stranger begins hanging out at the bar where she works, Shea is quick to recognize he is nothing but trouble, but she’s helpless to the way her body lights up every time his intense gray eyes tangle with hers.

They both soon find themselves drowning in a sea of desire and passion that won’t let them up for air.

Sebastian knows firsthand secrets never die, and he’s not the only one who’s hiding them.

Loving someone always comes with a price. But will it be Shea’s past that costs them everything?

My Review:

A.L. Jackson is one of my favorite authors, so naturally I had to read her latest release, A Stone in the Sea. I love the story line. Sebastian “Baz” Stone is one hot man but TROUBLE seems to follow him no matter where he goes! Shea Bently is extremely sweet and patient. The chemistry between them was undeniable.

Both character’s had very deep and intense thoughts. I felt like the language used in this book was from a different literary time period and doesn’t represent the present time, in which this book takes place.

“To be blinded by her light while she drowned me in her sea of dark.”

There were also a lot of chants:

“Pulling, Pulling, Pulling”
“Real, Real, Real”
“Want, Want, Want”
“Screaming, Screaming, Screaming”
“No, No, No”

These were some of the chants and thoughts that ran through the head’s of these characters. They just didn’t seem realistic. Maybe it’s just me and this is a style of writing I do not appreciate. I appreciate the down and dirty, the nitty gritty and want the narration of the actions between the characters. I can follow that easier. I think without all of the chants and the so over the top descriptive wording, lies a really great story.

I listened to the audible. Baz’s voice in the chapters where he gave his POV was so deep. However, during Shea’s POV Chapters, his voice was a bit lower and I liked it more. The voice change was really drastic. I know many audibles are like that but it also threw me off in the beginning.

Will I still read future A.L. Jackson’s future books? ABSOLUTELY! Again, she’s one of my favorite authors and even though I don’t like this book as much as her others, it doesn’t matter, she’s still a damn good writer! (You can’t please everyone all of the time, right?!)

The question also remains will I read the next book in this series? The answer is “YES.” That ending was totally unexpected and I NEED – NO, I WANT to know what happens. I was on the edge my seat begging for more!

Review: Dept. of Speculation by Jenny Offill

51gU4MK93GL._SL250_

Synopsis:

Dept. of Speculation is a portrait of a marriage. It is also a beguiling rumination on the mysteries of intimacy, trust, faith, knowledge, and the condition of universal shipwreck that unites us all.

Jenny Offill’s heroine, referred to in these pages as simply “the wife,” once exchanged love letters with her husband postmarked Dept. of Speculation, their code name for all the uncertainty that inheres in life and in the strangely fluid confines of a long relationship. As they confront an array of common catastrophes—a colicky baby, a faltering marriage, stalled ambitions—the wife analyzes her predicament, invoking everything from Keats and Kafka to the thought experiments of the Stoics to the lessons of doomed Russian cosmonauts. She muses on the consuming, capacious experience of maternal love, and the near total destruction of the self that ensues from it as she confronts the friction between domestic life and the seductions and demands of art.

With cool precision, in language that shimmers with rage and wit and fierce longing, Jenny Offill has crafted an exquisitely suspenseful love story that has the velocity of a train hurtling through the night at top speed. Exceptionally lean and compact, Dept. of Speculation is a novel to be devoured in a single sitting, though its bracing emotional insights and piercing meditations on despair and love will linger long after the last page.

My Review:

“Advice for wives circa 1896: The indiscriminate reading of novels is one of the most injurious habits to which a married woman can be subject. Besides the false views of human nature it will impart … it produces an indifference to the performance of domestic duties, and contempt for ordinary realities.” (BHaha, Really?!)

This book was on many “2014 Best Reads of the Year” lists and after reading the synopsis, I decided I needed to read this book. My curiosity behind all the hype surrounding this book was another reason I wanted to check it out.

The narrator in this book who’s a wife and mother of a baby girl, describes her life’s up and downs. The story is centered around both the baby girl and the marriage but has the feel of being a collage of significant life moments. Each moment was described in a way that drilled down to the details of that moment but the situations leading to these moments was not told in a detailed story like way that she feels defines her life. The author was able to compartmentalize these events and speculate as to why these events occurred and how it impacted her life. (Hence the title of the book!)

I read another review on this book and it described the book as as set of life events strewn around on a table as if the events were puzzle pieces and then placed together to figure out how she ended up where she was in each phase of her married life, and I agree. The narrator seems also convinced that her point of view is all that matters. Honestly, after completing this book I felt like it was a very interesting read. I found the fun facts entertaining. The narrative writing style is a bit different than what I’m used to. I did find the that Dept. of Speculation was a interesting, but short read.

“There are 60 seconds in a minute, 60 minutes in an hour, 24 hours in a day, 7 days in a week, 52 weeks in a year, and X years in a life. Solve for X.”

Review: Revved by Samantha Towle

When Andi is offered her dream job working in the glamorous world of F1, she leaves her home in Brazil, positive she can handle working for Carrick. But she’s not prepared for the off-the-chart sparks that fly the moment they meet.

Now, Andi has a crush on the one man she can’t have, and her resolve is about to be put to the test, because Carrick has decided he wants Andi, and he plans on testing her to the very limit…

My Review:

First off, I love the cover of this book! It’s Super Sexy. I’m a sucker for a nice cover and it’s even better when I love the book! The cover absolutely drew me in and the synopsis is what sealed the deal for me to read the book, oh and besides the fact that I’m A HUGE fan of Samantha Towle. (Yep, I’m still and always will be a Jake Wether’s Fangirl!)

I absolute LOVE this book! How often do you read a book about a super model looking chic who’s also a mechanic?! That absolutely does something to me! I’m a big fan of women doing a job that is predominantly performed by men! (Yes, what a man can do women can do better, if we want to!) Not only is this a great book for women but I can imagine this being a book for men (especially since some scenes are explicit) since it’s probably a wet dream of their’s to have a WOMAN who, knows cars inside and out, can fix them, be a freak in the sheets, and still look like a beauty queen all of the time!

Due to her past and for personal reasons, Andressa (Andi) Amaro Wolfe doesn’t date race car drivers. However, when she first meets the sexy, playboy, and race car driver extraordinaire Carrick Ryan, who she now sort of works for, sparks fly and the chemistry between them is simply undeniable! BUT Andressa doesn’t date race car drivers. Carrick’s tactics of trying to make Andressa his, his ways of coping with rejection, and being “friend zoned” makes this book very entertaining and hard to put down! (What’s a man like the Sexy, Irresistable Carrick Ryan to do?!)

“I can’t do this anymore, Andressa. I thought I could handle just being your friend, but I can’t. I’m tired of pretending, pretending that I don’t feel what I feel for you. I want you, and it’s not going away. And I know you feel the same. I can see it in your eyes…feel it in your body.”

This book is written from Andressa’s Point of View and I like the fact that sometimes she’s speaking directly to the reader.

Andi & Carrick love fast and furiously! Definitely buckle up because things get REVVED UP! I LOVE this BOOK!

It’s totally a MUST READ!

“You do realize, now that I have you, I’m not letting you go, right? From my garage or my bed. You have to stay forever.”

But will she? Read this book to find out!

Review: Levitate by Kaylee Ryan

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000038_00072]

Synopsis:

Trust. Five Letters. One Word.

I’m the girl who doesn’t let anyone in. My world was shattered and turned upside down in one night. Since then I’ve been trying to live, if that’s what you call it, but fighting the anxiety of what happened and trusting others is hard. Each day is a struggle to reach for the unknown.

Truth. Five Letters. One Word.

I watched my father give my mother the world and the stars. She took everything from him, then left him as a broken man with nothing to live for. I told myself I’d never fall in love. I’m guarding my heart and emotions, only looking out for number one. The only way to have truth in any relationship is to stay true to yourself.

Just when you think you’ve got it all figured out, you realize your puzzle is unfinished. You find a piece you never thought you needed until everything changes with one touch.

After that…you levitate.

My Review:

I’ve been Levitated!

Let me just start off by saying, I love the title “Levitate.” Personally, I adore unique titles especially when the book lives up to it. Levitate means to “rise or cause to rise into the air and float in apparent defiance of gravity.” Not only did this happen in the book, but to me as well while reading it! I was simply, on Cloud 9 floating and definitely didn’t want to come down.

The main characters in this amazing read were Kensington and Maxton. I absolutely love the names. (Maxton’s best friend name was Brighton!) If I ever, get a chance to interview Kaylee Ryan, I will definitely have to ask her how she came up with these names. Again, unique and I’m an absolute sucker for that! I love how the characters shortened each other names and by doing so they knew what that meant, many times it was for terms of endearment.

Kensington and Maxton both struggled with issues from their past which made them both not trust easily. However, after meeting, their chemistry was undeniable and barriers were definitely torn down. I believe that watching their best friends Brighton and Nicole’s romance unfold in front of them, helped them see that, in the long run that’s what they wanted for themselves. It was great to read how they overcame their past trust issues and let each other in.

“Truth… five letters, one word. My heart knows the truth. The truth is that I’m already in love with her.”

There it is that word – trust. Five Letters, one word. My heart knows the truth. The truth is that I’m already in love with her.

Maxton was very possessive over Kensington from the start and even though these actions shocked him, it felt to him like the natural thing to do. Maxton was a total ALPHA MALE. I believed that’s what made me fall in love with him! (GAH…A TOTAL, HOTTIE!)

I felt connected to Kensington right off the bat! She loved to read and never leaves home without her kindle! (Totally reminds me of me!) She’s witty, which makes her more likable, to me. She embraced Maxton’s possessiveness after she figured out that he would do anything to protect her and I absolutely love that at the moment she realized what was happening she went with it and let her guard down.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book, it’s a sweet emotional love journey of two broken people. It was beautifully written, I love the words used and the creativity of the names. The book flowed smoothly and consistently. The characters were well developed. Selfishly, I just want more and didn’t want it to end!

“I want to make you levitate. I want to be so far inside of you that we can’t tell where you end and I begin. I want you to tell me that you’re mine.”
